Of course, academics are relevant when choosing a university overseas, but campus culture can make a big difference to the student experience. At one of South Korea’s most renowned private universities, Yonsei University Clubs offer a great opportunity for students to connect with others, grow as leaders and even go outside their comfort zones. Yonsei University’s main Sinchon Campus is located in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul. It integrates old and new, academic buildings, libraries, laboratories, residence halls and students’ rooms, which are all part of the same architectural fabric. International students will have the opportunity to attend festivals, sports traditions, academic societies and cultural organisations and have access to one of the most vibrant cities in Asia. This guide will introduce the students on Yonsei campus, their clubs, traditions, accommodation, cost of living, and how UniRely can help the students prepare for university life.

Yonsei campus in Sinchon is famous for its beautiful combination of old stone buildings, gardening grounds and modern educational buildings. The central position also facilitates the access of the students to the various cafes, restaurants, shopping areas and public transport. It’s also known for its architecture and the seasonality of its scenery, which has made it a popular campus to see in the “Yonsei University K-drama” genre. Students should also consider, among other things, the location of the classes and residence halls and the time required for commuting.

Academic Life and Classroom Experience

Daily student life is centred on lectures, seminars, assignments, presentations and independent study. In some programmes, students are also able to engage in laboratory, group working or research work. Yonsei provides programs in humanities, business/economics, engineering, science, international studies, computer science, life sciences and more. Students are advised to review the language of instruction of their programme carefully. While certain courses are conducted in English, there are also courses for those who can speak Korean, which can make life on campus a bit easier and may allow access to a wider range of courses.

Yonsei has a high identity about the university, and festivals, sports, and cheering are important for students’ culture.

AKARAKA and Spring Festivals

The Yonsei University AKARAKA festival is one of the university’s most recognised student traditions. AKARAKA began in 1986 and developed into a major cheering event associated with Yonsei’s school spirit. Spring also brings Daedongje, a multi-day campus festival with performances, exhibitions, sports activities and department-run events. AKARAKA and Daedongje are related but distinct parts of Yonsei’s spring festival culture.

Yonsei–Korea University Rivalry

Another major tradition is the annual sports rivalry between Yonsei University and Korea University.
