Applying for Study Permits and Study-work Permits when Studying in Canadian Universities

There are two types of permits international students interested in studying in Canadian universities can get:

  1. the study permit, or
  2. the study-work permit (SW1).

The study permit authorises you to study full-time and to work part-time only on the campus of your university.

The study-work permit authorises you to get enrolled in a Co-op program or to simply be eligible to work part-time or full-time outside of your campus premises (as long as you are enrolled in a legitimate academic institution).

How to apply for a study permit or a study-work permit?

1) When preparing your documents, you will need:

  • An acceptance letter from your university
  • A valid passport or travel document
  • Proof of funds indicating that you can support yourself through family backing or personal funds
  • In some cases, you may also need to provide your biometrics
  • And, for a study-work permit, you will need to provide your employment history

2) The fees for the study permit visa application or study-work permit visa are 150 CAD (Approx. 7500 INR) and the processing period is about 5 weeks.

3) The online application can be sent through the Citizen and Immigration Canada (CIC) website and offline through VFS global services in India.
