Things to Keep in Mind When Building Your Resume for Your College Applications
Your resume is an important component for your application to universities across the globe. It helps you to note down all your significant activities and achievements in one place.Â
Before Starting with your resume, mention all the things you have done till today. You should include some of your major experiences from high school. It can be any volunteer work, internships, important projects, jobs, student clubs, or organizations. If you have any achievement records, mention those too.
When you start with your resume, start with creating headings like ‘Experience’, ‘Achievements’, ‘Education’, etc. Write down all the details under the respective headings. Make a heading of ‘Skills’ too. Under it, mention all your skills. These can be both technical and non-technical.
HEADING
- Let your name stick out
- Mention contact details: email, phone, address
- You Should also include your permanent address
INTERNSHIPS & WORK EXPERIENCE
Don’t forget to include:
- Name of the company
- Location and date
- Your job profile
- 3-5 points stating your accomplishments
- If you have completed your internship, make sure to write in the past tense.
- Include various experiences of volunteer works, internships, jobs, student organization or other academic clubs, study abroad
- Experience, if gained by any major projects
- Mention the skills gained by various experiences in the SKILLS section.
TAILORED HEADINGS
- Try to be specific.
- Just the headings such as ‘EXPERIENCE’, ‘ACHIEVEMENTS’ won’t suffice.
- Framing the experience as per your intended field of study will look impressive.
COURSEWORK (optional)
- If adding, include only the ones that are appropriate for your college profile.
- You can add various projects, research.
- Add online courses, if taken any.
EDUCATION AND HONORS
- Mention the name of your school.
- Write your GPA or overall percentage, if it is above 3.0 or 85%
- Add your subjects.
ACCOMPLISHMENT STATEMENTS
- Begin each point with a strong action verb to make it impressive.
- Elaborate what you did to show that skill.
- Elaborate the reason for using that skill and what you achieve with it.
FORMATTING TIPS
- Your resume shouldn’t be lengthy. The standard length is of 1 page but sometimes can be extended to a maximum of 2 pages (front & back).
- Keep the same font throughout and avoid using colorful fonts.
- Keep the language simple.
- Avoid spelling errors.
- Avoid unnecessary and personal information like your family members’ names, background, etc.
- Don’t use abbreviations.
SKILLS SECTION TIPS
Different terms used for describing language skills:
- Literate: Can easily read & write.
- Conversational: Can only speak the language.
- Proficient: Can read, write and speak well.
- Fluent: Can read, write and speak the language as a native speaker.
- Computer Skills: This includes software, languages (Java, C++, etc.), hardware knowledge.
- Lab Skills: This is inclusive of laboratory experience, procedure, techniques and the knowledge of the equipment you can work with.
