Different options for Working in the UK

International students who start their studies in the UK in 2020 or after will benefit from the new post-study work visa (PSW) for graduates. This usually means a work and residence permit of 24 months (2 years) after graduation.

During this time you can stay in the UK and look for suitable job opportunities. There are several job opportunities available to international students depending on your field of study. For example, there are several consulting firms such as Boston Consulting Group, McKinsey & Co., Deloitte, Accenture, and more. There are also opportunities with tech giants like Amazon, and several smaller tech startups.

Depending on your field of study, you need to scout for opportunities that align with your short term goals. Unlike universities in India, there are no campus placement committees offered by the universities, and hence, you need to be proactive in your job search.

For example, let’s say you just graduated with an MBA in Finance from Judge Business School, Cambridge. You will now have several university fairs, exhibitions and so on and so forth to attend that will help you meet the right people and network. You may also keep a tab on job opportunities online to help you stay up-to-date with openings that are suitable for your profile. Networking makes up a major component of your job search, and hence, it is important that you put yourself out there, and form meaningful connections that you can later leverage as job opportunities. Job search is tough but it is well worth it. Since competition in the job market in the UK is relatively less than that in India, you are likely to get the job you prefer amongst a pool of other applicants. In most UK employment reports, upwards of 90 % have found a job within 3 months of completing their degree from a reputed university in the UK.

Since you are a graduate or an MBA student, your point of entry in the job market will be a grade higher than any fresher or undergrad. As a result, you can expect a median salary of £80,000 – £100,000 (INR 76 lacs – INR 95 lacs) per year. Considering that your living expenses was £10,000 (around INR 10 lacs) and you studied for one year and paid a tuition upwards of £80,000 (INR 76 lacs), you can expect to get a return on investment, along with the interest repayment in 3-5 years time. This is, provided your visas are approved and you get to be gainfully employed in the UK for a considerable period of time.
