Guide to Applying to Massachusetts Institute of Technology

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is a private land-grant research university located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. English Proficiency Test Requirements

As a non-native international applicant, it’s recommended that you attest English proficiency test scores as it’s an obligatory requirement to ensure that you blend in with locals and fellow classmates.

  • 100 and above on the TOEFL iBT
  • 7.0 and above on the IELTS Academic
  • 70 and above on the PTE Academic

 

ACT/SAT Requirements

Due to the pandemic, SAT/ACT scores are not an obligatory requirement, but if you do have brilliant scores, it’s recommended that you submit your scores. There are no cut-off requirements on the ACT or SAT scores, as they are gauged within an applicant’s context. But, as a rule of thumb, the higher, the better.

MIT only accepts undergrad applications via its own portal named “MyMIT application portal” & “QuestBridge.” 

 

Essay Prompts

Unlike other universities that require you to submit one awfully long essay, the MIT application comprises a series of questions to be answered concisely (up to 200-250 words).

  1. Describe the world you come from; for example, your family, clubs, school, community, city, or town. How has that world shaped your dreams and aspirations? (250 words or fewer)
  2. Pick what field of study at MIT appeals to you the most right now, and tell us more about why this field of study appeals to you. (100 words or fewer)
  3. We know you lead a busy life, full of activities, many of which are required of you. Tell us about something you do simply for the pleasure of it. (200–250 words)

For the session 2021-2022, all the usual SAT/ACT testing requirements have been suspended. But, applicants are highly recommended to submit their English language proficiency scores.
