Introduction

New York University in the city of New York is one of the most applied to universities in the US in 2019. NYU is a private university mainly focusing on research and holds alumni all around the world. Out of 25 schools it has, 10 of them are undergrad schools. Each school in the university is highly ranked and very selective in the students they choose to give an admit to. Getting an admit at NYU might be a dream for many so we’ve broken down the application process to make it easier to apply.

English Proficiency Test Requirements

In order to make sure that you are able to keep up with your studies and communicate with your peers, universities like NYU require some sort of proof that shows you are really capable of doing that.

If you’re not a native English speaker or haven’t studied a course for 3 years which is taught only in English, you would need to submit test scores. Here are the test scores that NYU currently accepts:

  • 100 and above on the TOEFL iBT
  • 125 and above on the Duolingo English Test (Only for transfer applicants for Fall semester 2020 and first-year applicants for Fall semester 2021 and beyond)
  • 7.5 and above on the IELTS Academic
  • 70 and above on the PTE Academic
  • 191 and above on the Cambridge English Scale
  • 4.5 and above on the iTEP

ACT/SAT Requirements

NYU accepts both ACT and SAT scores so you can give any one of those exams.

Test Score Range Average Score Required
ACT 1-36 29-33
SAT 400-1600 1290-1490

Tuition Fee and Cost of Living

The tuition fee and cost of living below are provided for a reference so that you can get a fair idea of how much you would have to spend. Always confirm the actual amount on the official university page.

Annual Cost In US Dollars In Indian Rupees
Tuition Fee $51,828 ₹ 36,27,960
Living Expenses $22,848 ₹ 15,99,360
Total $74,676 ₹ 52,27,320

The conversion from USD to INR has been made with $1 = ₹70. The cost may vary with the varying exchange rate.

Application Portal

NYU’s website contains a comprehensive guide for international students who are applying. All the applications have to be submitted within the deadlines. You can start by reading the application guidelines here https://www.nyu.edu/admissions/undergraduate-admissions/how-to-apply/international-applicants.html and follow the process. The page will take you to an application portal where you can submit your details and fill out everything that is required.

Essay Prompts

When you apply to NYU, they require you to write down a 400-word essay expressing why you chose to apply particularly to that university. This essay will act as a measure of your creativity, interest, and will reflect who you are. The essay prompt is:

‘We would like to know more about your interest in NYU. We are particularly interested in knowing what motivated you to apply to NYU and more specifically, why you have applied or expressed interest in a particular campus, school, college, program, and/or area of study? If you have applied to more than one, please tell us why you are interested in each of the campuses, schools, colleges, or programs to which you have applied. We want to understand – Why NYU? (400 words)’

It’s best not to make it too generic like the thousands of other applicants will. Make sure your essay is to the point, making yours stand out.
