English Proficiency Requirements

International applicants are required to submit English Proficiency scores in their application. These scores will demonstrate if you’ll be able to keep up with the demanding curriculum of the university or not. Below are the English proficiency requirements of UC Berkeley.

  • 80 or above in the TOEFL (Berkeley prefers 100)
  •  6.5 or above in the IELTS academic
  • 115 or above in the Duolingo English Test 

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions must receive the test results till January before the fall semester applicant wants to enroll. 

Other ways to prove your English proficiency are:

  • 3+ years of Language of Instruction (LOI) in English
  • Score 3, 4, or 5 on the AP examination in English Language and Composition, or English Literature and Composition
  • Score 6 or 7 on the IB Standard Level examination in English (Language A only)
  • Score 5, 6, or 7 on the IB Higher Level examination in English (Language A only) 

 

ACT/SAT Requirements 

UC Berkeley calls itself a test-free university now. It will no longer use ACT or SAT scores in the review, selection, or scholarship process. However, any scores you submit will be used for placement or subject credit purposes if you get admitted. As always, a holistic review of your application will determine your admission. Other scores in other non-required subject exams (SAT subject test, AP test, IB test, etc.) will add value to your application. Below mentioned are the ACT/SAT score benchmarks you should aim for.
