Importance of Career Objectives

A Masters degree is a professional degree that needs to be aligned with your career objectives.  Universities in the UK want to know that you are a good fit for the program and that your short term and long term career objectives align with what the program has to offer.

As a result, you will have to enlist in detail what your short term and long term goals are, and how the university’s program fits into your plans. This may be part of your Statement of Purpose, Essay Questions or an independent section altogether.

For example, if you are a computer engineer and are applying to a masters program in Computer Science, you will have to tell the admissions committee exactly what you aim to achieve 5 years from the program. This could mean which role, industry, vertical or sector you’re interested in. Similarly, if you are applying to an MBA program, and depending on your previous work experience you will have to narrate a story that fits well with your immediate short term career goals.

The university wants to know that the students they admit will be successful in their field of choice. As a result, a cohesive story that makes logical sense when it comes to your career objectives is of utmost importance. This means that if you come from a social sector background, it would be a little unreasonable for you to expect to work in Consulting post an MBA program.

Just like the short term goals, which you will pursue right upon the completion of your program, the school will ask you to detail your long term goal. The long term goal should be in alignment with your short term goal. Ideally, your short term goal should lead to you achieving and being equipped for your long term career objectives.

For example, a Computer Engineer can say that upon graduating, she wants to work at a tech startup in the short term and in the long term, wants to be an entrepreneur herself, having learned how to set up an organization and its different verticals at a startup. This is one of many examples of how a student can share his or her short term and long term career objectives with the Admissions Committee.
