Importance of Extracurricular Activities

Highlighting both your work experience as well as your extra-curricular activities give the Admissions Committee a holistic view of your passions, interests, and professional advancements in addition to your academic credentials and test scores. It is therefore important that you list them down chronologically and in a clear manner, so as to give a comprehensive view of your overall profile.

First, we’ll talk about Work Experience

Work Experience

Work experience entails any full-time jobs you have held since your graduation. When talking about your work experience, you must highlight:

  • Your position held
  • Company details
  • Duration of the job
  • Your roles and responsibilities
  • The company’s HR details if required.

Some universities also ask you to list down all the achievements & accolades you received during your work experience.

It is important to express your work experience in terms of tangible outcomes so that the person reviewing your application can clearly understand the impact you have had at your organization. Work experience is recommended for your application to all universities in the UK but many universities might not have it as a requirement. You can find out each university’s requirements on their respective websites.

Now, we’ll talk about extracurricular activities

Extracurricular activities

Extra-curricular activities entail any positions of responsibility held outside of your full-time work experience, but excluding internships. Extracurricular activities could include:

  • Leadership positions,
  • Volunteering and social service activities,
  • Other activities like writing for a magazine, Model United Nations, or any participation in clubs and organizations

Extra-curricular activities show the Admissions Committee that you are interested in hobbies and passions outside of your work, making you a more holistic candidate and helping you stand out in the pool of applicants. For example, winning the Best Delegate award at a Model United Nations competition shows the Admissions Committee that you are well-rounded and a great orator, thus strengthening your application.
