Letters of recommendation can give your college application a much-needed edge in the highly competitive admission process. These letters provide evidence of the skills and character of an applicant. Let’s go through the importance of recommendation letters as this section is an essential component in your application when applying to universities in Hong Kong for an undergraduate degree.

Letters of Recommendation

Recommendation Letters or Reference letters is a document which provides the university insights into your skills, competencies, capabilities and experiences. The letters need to be written by your academic counselor or teachers.

A few things to include to enhance the quality of your Recommendation Letter could be:

1: Skills/Abilities/Strengths.

2: Personality

3: Work Ethic

4: Contributions to school or society

5: Work Experiences

6: Anecdotes

It is advised to get two recommendation letters ready. One letter can be written by your teacher and another letter from your school counselor. Both the recommendation letters need to include your skills, capabilities, and achievements. It is always better to get your letter written by a teacher or counselor who knows you, your achievements and teaches the subject you are applying for. For example,  if you are applying for a Business course, your commerce teacher should write the recommendation letter.

The letter should not only focus on your academics but should also include the work you have done outside the classroom such as volunteering, internships or extracurriculars. Moreover, it should also speak about your personality, your values and work ethic. This allows academic officers to gain insight and understand what you are capable of.

Submissions of these letters depend from university to university. For example, if applying to HKUST, you would have to input the details of a single referee and they will submit the recommendation letter for you. For HKU and other universities in Hong Kong, you can submit more than one recommendation letter in the supporting documents section.
