Understanding the Process of Applying to Universities in Singapore for an Undergraduate Degree

Singapore has many high-ranked universities that match the standards of top universities across the world, including Ivy League universities. The most important and heavily-weighed component of your application is your academic standing.

Most universities in Singapore make a decision on your admission based on your academic record. You will be required to provide the following documents:

  1. Grade 10 Final Transcript
  2. Grade 12 Final Transcript
  3. SAT or ACT Scores

Depending on the university you are applying to and the board of education that you are studying under, the SAT or ACT may/may not be required for your application. It is always recommended to check the official website of each university to gain an understanding of their academic requirements.

Usually, along with very strong academic credentials, Singaporean universities are looking for students who are intellectually curious and driven, as the educational atmosphere is rigorous. Other components of the application process, which are also important include:

    1. Statement of Purpose: Most universities require some form of a SOP. Some universities require 1 SOP whereas others might require you to answer a few questions in an essay form.
    2. Special Achievements: Universities like NUS/NTU consider applicants with significant achievement in sports, olympiads or any other competitions at the National or International level. Other universities may ask you to provide a record of all your extra-curricular activities in high school.
    3. Interviews: For international students, online interviews may be conducted based on the course you have applied for

Of course, the application process for Singapore is daunting, as each university has its own requirements.

To help you get some perspective, let’s consider an example where you are applying to the National University of Singapore for Computer Science.

  • According to the official website, you would need a good percentage in all the subjects that you have taken, including English. Normally, the average percentage of each admitted student is around 97%, so you would definitely need to score at least 95% in all subjects in your final exams so that the admissions committee considers your application.
  • In the application form, you will need to write a Personal Statement, explaining your course choice and your motivation to study at NUS. For example, you will need to explain your interest in Computer Science and mention what you have done in your high school career that demonstrates this interest. It could be anything from participating in coding competitions to developing a mobile application. We also recommend that you dive into details about why NUS is the perfect place for your academic career – you can highlight some of their facilities and professors and how that might help you to achieve your goals.
  • Additionally, NUS considers exceptional academic achievements in the form of international olympiads as well as good performance in IIT JEE Advanced Examinations.
  • For those students who have studied under the State Board, they must submit their SAT or ACT scores.
