Best way to Short-list Universities when Applying for an Undergraduate Degree in Canada

Certainly, applying to as many universities as possible would increase your chances of getting in. But applications to universities can be very expensive and it would not make any financial sense to apply to a large number of universities at random, so creating a university list is important. Here are the things that you need to keep in mind:

Estimates of costs

If you choose to apply to universities in the province of Ontario, you would apply through the provincial portal called OUAC (Ontario Universities’ Application Centre). Including the base fees, international application fees and individual university fees, you might have to pay approximately 500 Canadian Dollars (25,000 Indian Rupees). Applying to more universities means you will have to pay an additional of 50 Canadian Dollars + the universities’ individual fees which range anywhere from 70 to 100 Canadian Dollars.

Making smart application decisions

Thoroughly short-listing universities not only allows you to prepare cost-effective applications but also helps you make informed and smarter choices.

  1. Start-off with looking up universities online, exploring their websites, navigating through their courses and making a general list of all the universities that interested you.
  2. Dig deeper into this list of universities to find out their rankings, what courses they are best known for and what opportunities they offer within your program of interest.
  3. Eliminate universities that fall short of offering what you seek.
  4. Next, assess the universities’ fee structures and their scholarship programs.
  5. Make sure you have a good look at the acceptance rates of the universities you have on your radar. This will help you categorise your choices into 2 groups:
    • Ambitious universities (Ones that you truly aspire to get into but there is a high risk of rejection)
    • and, safety net universities (Ones that you would not mind getting into and there is a fair chance of acceptance)

Digging deep and taking multiple factors into consideration is sure to boil down your choices to a few.
