Steps to Apply to Universities in the UK for an Undergraduate Degree

The UK is among the world’s most popular destinations for higher education. Going to college or university in the UK is a great way to develop your skills, expand your knowledge, improve your critical thinking and enjoy new experiences.

In order to apply for a bachelor degree in the UK, applicants need to register and complete the UCAS application form. Depending upon your chosen course and universities, there are different entry requirements – 70% weightage is given to Academics and the rest 30% is given to other components such as the SOP, LORs etc.

Universities in the UK, give almost a 70% weightage to academics, which consists of:

  1. 10th-grade board exams marksheet
  2. 12th grade predicted marksheet
  3. IELTS or TOEFL scores
  4. SAT or ACT scores. Even though submitting these scores is not compulsory, you can submit these if you have done exceptionally well.

It is important to remember that some top universities such as Oxford and Cambridge have their own respective tests which are important for admission.

Academics are really important so make sure you study hard In addition, other aspects of similar weightage are:

  1. Personal statement, also known as the SOP
  2. Extracurriculars and Work Experience
  3. Letters of recommendation

Let me put all this information in an example for the ease of understanding.

If you are applying to Oxford University for an undergraduate degree, you will need the following:

  1. Exceptional grades in class 10 and predicted grades in class 12
  2. An IELTS score of at least an 8 or a TOEFL score of at least 110
  3. A well written personal statement that highlights your reason for choosing Oxford and your field of study.
  4. You will need one teacher’s and one counselor’s recommendation.
  5. You may also need to take a supplementary test designed by Oxford University such as the TSA, which stands for Thinking Skills Assessment.

Once all these are completed, your application to Oxford will be complete as well. Your application and completed documents will be submitted through the UCAS around mid-October. After being shortlisted, you may have to appear for an interview.

I hope this example was able to help you understand the process. It’s a good idea to get guidance on your application process to universities in the UK by signing up on the UniRely platform.
