GRE subject tests are achievement tests that measure your knowledge in a particular field of study. These tests are only offered in six disciplines, which are:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Literature in English
  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Psychology

Keep in mind that the GRE subject test is different from the GRE general test. GRE general tests are not discipline-specific; they instead measure verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning and analytical writing.

If you’re applying for a master’s degree in one of these six disciplines, there’s a chance that the universities you’re applying to will ask for GRE subject test scores. Not all universities require GRE subject test scores, but taking them certainly has benefits. Universities in the US get prospective applicants from varying educational backgrounds. The GRE subject test provides a common measure for comparing candidates’ subject-specific knowledge.

GRE subject tests are extremely helpful if you’re applying to a master’s degree in a subject that is different from your undergraduate major. For example: if you majored in Economics during your undergraduate degree and you want to apply to Psychology master’s degrees, then it would be extremely helpful to take the GRE Psychology test because it would display your ability to learn and understand the material in Psychology.

The GRE subject test is paper-based as opposed to the GRE general test which is usually computer-delivered. The subject test is also offered only three times a year so it’s recommended to book the test well in time. The format of the test really varies depending upon what subject you’re taking the test in. For example, the GRE Mathematics test has 66 questions while the GRE Psychology test has 205. However, all GRE subject tests have a standard amount of time to finish the test which is 2 hours and 50 minutes. All GRE subject tests are scored out of 990. A good GRE subject score is considered to be 650 and above. Since GRE subjects tests are offered in different disciplines, a good score may vary a little depending upon the discipline. It’s always best to check what a good score would be in your field. Many universities also upload test score related data on their websites which can be used for figuring out average scores.

Preparation for a GRE subject test would be identical to any other standardized test. Our university-specific mentors at UniRely can guide you through it. For more information about how to apply to universities abroad for your master’s degree, please visit our website – www.unirely.com.
