Academic Requirements when Applying to Universities in Singapore for an Undergraduate Degree

When applying to universities in Singapore for an undergraduate degree, it is important to keep in mind that the admissions committee mainly looks at your academic credentials while screening your application, so stellar grades are of paramount importance. The main documents required are:

  1. Grade 10 Final Transcript
  2. Grade 11 Final Transcript (Optional for some universities)
  3. Grade 12 Final Transcript
  4. SAT/ACT (Optional for some universities)
  5. SAT Subject Tests (Optional for some universities)
  6. IIT-JEE Scores (Optional)
  7. University Academic Transcript (if currently studying at another university and applying as a transfer student)

We will now be looking at how you can optimise your application to stand out in terms of academic performance.

Grades in High School

Having a great academic record is of utmost importance to universities in Singapore, as it showcases your ability to take on the rigour at these universities. Therefore, it is important for you to perform well throughout high school – from grade 9 all the way to grade 12.

The most important component of your application is your Grade 12 Final Transcript. Although some universities may screen your predicted grades in the application process, your final transcript is required for them to release your admission decision. Being in the top 5% of your cohort will give you an edge in the application.

Whichever board of education you follow, it is important to maintain an excellent academic record.

SAT & ACT (Optional Academic Components)

While it is an optional component in your application, the SAT or the ACT exam can surely boost your academic credentials and display your competence.

First, let’s talk about the SAT. The three sections are:

  1. Reading and Writing, which is scored out of 800 points
  2. Mathematics, also scored out of 800 points
  3. And the Optional Essay, scored out of12 points

If you do decide to take the SAT, then you will have to write the essay component of the exam. Most universities in Singapore require a minimum score of around 1250, but it is recommended to have a score above 1400/1600 to strengthen your application.

Next, the ACT has 5 sections:

  1. English
  2. Mathematics
  3. Reading
  4. Science
  5. Writing

Each section, except the writing section, is scored out of 36. Although the Writing section is optional, you will be required to take it for the ACT to be considered as part of your application. A composite score of 31 and above will place you in a good position in the application screening stages.

Now, we’ll talk about the SAT Subject Tests.

SAT Subject Tests (Optional Academic Components)

You may also choose to take the SAT Subject Tests to showcase your academic abilities in certain subjects. The most commonly taken subjects are:

  1. SAT Math – I
  2. SAT Math – II
  3. SAT Physics
  4. SAT Chemistry
  5. SAT Biology E/M

Each subject test is scored out of 800 points.

Next, let’s talk about IIT-JEE Scores.

IIT-JEE Scores (Optional Academic Components)

Universities in Singapore also accept IIT-JEE (Main & Advanced) scores. If you have taken the examination and secured a good All India Rank, then it is recommended to submit your scores as this will give a very big boost to your application.

The optional components of your application add-on to your academic credentials to show the admission officers that you are a competent candidate. Having a good record in these external examinations will surely increase your chances to get into your dream university!
