Application Portals and its Sections when Applying to Universities in Singapore for an Undergraduate Degree

Each university in Singapore has its own application form and you will have to apply individually to each university that you have shortlisted. The applications open in the month of October for most universities. The application closing dates are different for each university but most deadlines are towards the end of March.

The documents required to have a complete application are:

  1. Scanned copy of your Passport
  2. Official High School Transcripts of Grades 10 and 12
  3. Your certificates of examinations such as SAT/ACT and English Language Proficiency tests such as IELTS and TOEFL
  4. Personal Statement
  5. Scanned copy of your certificates and awards
  6. Contact information of your: Academic referee, who would be writing your letter of recommendation and your IB coordinator career counselor, for your predicted grade report (in some cases)

Here are the details on each section:

1. Personal Particulars Section

In this section, you will be required to fill in all your personal details such as full name, date of birth, email id, contact numbers, Passport details, home address and other such details.

2. Course Choice Section

Here, you will be required to choose your preferred major. Depending on the university, you will have up to a maximum of 3 or 5-course choices. NUS and NTU, the two major universities accept up to 5-course choices in the application. The first choice is the topmost priority and if you are unsuccessful for that course, you will be automatically considered for the remaining courses in decreasing priority.

3. Secondary Education Section

In this section, you will need to provide your secondary education details such as school name, expected date of graduation and results of your 10th board examinations. At a later stage, you will have to update the university with your 12th board examination results when they are available.

4. External Examinations Results and English Language Proficiency

Most universities have optional space to input your SAT/ACT scores and AP scores. You can also fill in your IELTS or TOEFL results although it is not a requirement.

Depending on each university, the requirements vary. For example, SAT/ACT is required by NUS and NTU if the student has written State board exams. For CBSE, ISC, IB students it is not required. SMU requires anyone test score from SAT/ACT/TOEFL/IELTS. We suggest you check the requirements of each university when applying.

5. Outstanding Achievements

This is an optional section where you can list down any awards that you have won on the national or international level. Some examples of outstanding achievements are Gold Medalist in the International Math Olympiad, National/ International level sports player or any other area of Arts/ Sports where you have represented your home country in an international arena. You will have to provide scanned copies of your certificates after you submit your application.

6. Personal Statement

Different universities have different requirements for the personal statement. For example, NUS requires a personal statement of about 300 words mentioning your interest in applying to NUS and summarising your significant achievements and experiences that have helped you to decide your major.

7. Academic Reference

This section is not required by all universities. Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) requires you to submit an academic recommendation letter which can be from your principal or a math/science teacher. You will have to fill in details of your academic referee like their Full Name, Designation, email ID and contact number. The university will directly contact them for their reference. After you are done with these, we move on to the final stage in the application process.

8. Uploading Important Documents

You will be required to upload all supporting documents in this section. NUS and NTU require you to submit all your documents after you have submitted your application. To summarise, these documents include:
