In order to make sure that you are able to keep up with your studies and communicate with your peers, universities like NYU require some sort of proof that shows you are really capable of doing that.
If you’re not a native English speaker or haven’t studied a course for 3 years which is taught only in English, you would need to submit test scores. Here are the test scores that NYU currently accepts:
- 100 and above on the TOEFL iBT
- 125 and above on the Duolingo English Test (Only for transfer applicants for Fall semester 2020 and first-year applicants for Fall semester 2021 and beyond)
- 7.5 and above on the IELTS Academic
- 70 and above on the PTE Academic
- 191 and above on the Cambridge English Scale
- 4.5 and above on the iTEP
ACT/SAT Requirements
NYU accepts both ACT and SAT scores so you can give any one of those exams.
Test | Score Range | Average Score Required |
ACT | 1-36 | 29-33 |
SAT | 400-1600 | 1290-1490 |

The page will take you to an application portal where you can submit your details and fill out everything that is required.
Essay Prompts
When you apply to NYU, they require you to write down a 400-word essay expressing why you chose to apply particularly to that university. This essay will act as a measure of your creativity, interest, and will reflect who you are. The essay prompt is:
‘We would like to know more about your interest in NYU. We are particularly interested in knowing what motivated you to apply to NYU and more specifically, why you have applied or expressed interest in a particular campus, school, college, program, and/or area of study? If you have applied to more than one, please tell us why you are interested in each of the campuses, schools, colleges, or programs to which you have applied. We want to understand – Why NYU? (400 words)’
It’s best not to make it too generic like the thousands of other applicants will. Make sure your essay is to the point, making yours stand out.
