Application Portals for Admission to UK

Unlike the undergraduate admissions applications, there is no Common App or UCAS in the case of master’s programs in the UK.

Every university has its own application portals which the students need to fill out. However, it is important to note that some universities may have separate login credentials for different types of Master’s programs at the same university. For example, the login for an MBA at Warwick might be different from the login for an MA at the same university. Similarly, if you wish to apply to two different masters program; some universities have a common application, while for others you have to log in separately on a different page specific to the separate program.

Now let’s dive into the components of an application.

Components of an application

Each university might have different requirements in their applications, but most of the universities divide their applications into 10 main sections.

The first section on any application is the Personal Information section. This section requires you to fill in detailed information about your contact details, as well as information about your family.

The second section on the application is the Academic Information section. Here is where you mention the details of the 3 or 4 years of your undergraduate degree, and your grades in detail. You will also be required to upload your transcripts as well as list your Cumulative Grade Point Average here.

The third section on the application is where you mention your test scores. You will have to upload your English Proficiency test scores which are either the IELTS or the TOEFL. If applicable, you may either upload your GRE test scores if you are applying for a Masters Program, or a GRE / GMAT score if you are applying for an MBA program.

The fourth section on the application asks you to detail your work experience and extracurricular activities, where you must list down all your professional achievements, along with volunteering experiences and any other extracurricular experiences you may have had.

The fifth section on the application will ask you to write an essay. The essay questions may range from “Why you want to do an MBA” or a simple “Personal Statement or Statement of Purpose” which will further strengthen your application. This requirement depends from university to university and the details will be mentioned on the application itself.

The sixth section is where you will have to detail your career objectives, i.e. what you wish to achieve professionally post this degree. Here you will have to list down exactly what professional goals you aim towards as a result of your masters degree. For e.g. this could be a specific position in a sector or a company.

The seventh section is your Letters of Recommendation Section, where you will have to list down the names and contact information of your referees who will then write you a Letter of Recommendation.

The eighth section is Financing your Degree Section, where you will have to let the admissions committee know how you plan on financing your degree, which can include personal savings, loans, or grants, etc.

The ninth section may be a Scholarship Essay section, where you answer an essay that makes you eligible for scholarship consideration.

The last section is the payment section – where you’ll need to pay the application fee individually to each program that you apply to. Some universities have a fee waiver, and you may email the university to gather if you qualify for the waiver.
