Process of Applying to Universities in Hong Kong for an Undergraduate Degree
As the college application season gets closer and closer, we at UniRely, hope to make your life easier. Studying in HK can help you form strong social and professional connections that can be crucial while starting off your career. So we have compiled this blog which will take you through the entire application process of The Hong Kong Universities.
In this blog, I will be going through the basics of the application process, starting with the Academic Component.
The Academic Component
Universities in Hong Kong give more than 80% weightage to academics on your application. These include:
- Your Predicted grades for class 12
- Class 10th and 11th Final Grades
- IELTS and TOEFL scores
- SAT or ACT scores (Optional)
- Advanced Placement Exams (Optional)
The Universities are mainly concerned with your predicted grades because they want to understand how well you will fair in your final examinations before giving out their offer. This is one of the most important aspects of your application, so keep this ready. Apart from that, your 10th and 11th grades show how well you have fared previously, so you may need to submit these documents as well.
IELTS or TOEFL scores are required by some universities in Hong Kong as it helps to show your proficiency in the English language. SAT/ACT are optional but they may put you at an advantage in your application.
Other Components
The other important components of the application are:
- Personal Statement, that supports your application to study at a university. It helps in articulating your passion, skills and experience in a chosen field. It is one of the most important documents as it provides the university with vital information pertaining to your application.
- Letters of Recommendation, which could be from a teacher or mentor who knows you well and can write about you
- Work Experience and Extracurricular Activities such as internships, voluntary work is what differentiates you from others, in some cases, these may even help you secure a scholarship
These are all the components required when applying to universities in Hong Kong. After your application goes through, there will be a round of interviews, after which you will receive your “conditional” admission letter.
What is a conditional offer?
This means that the offer holds good only if you achieve the condition they have given you in your letter. For example, if you are studying in the IB (International Baccalaureate) you will be asked to secure a grade of 35 on 45. If you do, you are admitted to the institution. If not, then your offer expires and you have to go through an appeal process.
This may seem like a lot, but as I said, we at UniRely will go through this application step by step to make you feel more comfortable. Once you connect with our counselors, you will realize how things will fall into place automatically.
